A man in Shenzhen, China, found 2 kilograms of gold worth nearly 2 million yuan (around 7.4 billion VND) but showed no sign of greed, choosing instead to hand it over to the traffic police.
World News reported on September 18 that a young man recently found a gold bar weighing 2,267.83 grams, worth nearly 2 million yuan, on the roadside in Shuibei, Luohu, Shenzhen (Guangdong, China), and immediately handed it over to the traffic police. He even stated that he felt “not the slightest ripple of temptation” in his heart.
After the story was reported, the topic “finding gold without greed” quickly climbed to the No. 1 trending search in China.
One netizen remarked humorously: “Even a chocolate bar that big, I wouldn’t dare to buy.”
Mr. Ta – the man who found the gold – said that while on his way to deliver goods, he noticed a gold bar lying on the roadside, immediately picked it up, and handed it over to the traffic police.
Mr. Ta said that at that moment he had no other thoughts in his mind, only feeling that what did not belong to him should not be kept, so he remained very calm, describing his state as “without a single ripple.”
Mr. Ta added that when he first picked up the gold and felt its weight in his hand, he could tell it was very heavy and surely very valuable, and he thought the owner must be extremely worried. However, because he was in a hurry to work, he immediately handed it over to the traffic police.
After receiving the gold, the traffic police asked Mr. Ta to wait for a while so they could clarify how the gold had been lost.
Do Mr. Ta picked up the gold in a lane for non-motor vehicles, the police suspected that the owner might have dropped it while riding an electric bike.
Upon verification, the gold bar he found weighed 2,267.83 grams, worth nearly 2 million yuan at current prices.
Traffic officer Hou Guodong said that while he and his colleagues were regulating traffic order on Shuibei 2nd Road (Luohu District), a citizen came up asking for help, saying he had picked up a gold bar.
Just a few minutes later, a man arrived at the scene claiming to be the owner. At that moment, officers from the local police station also arrived.
After checking personal information, purchase records, and reviewing surveillance footage to confirm how the gold was dropped, the police concluded that the bar did indeed belong to the man, who had accidentally lost it while walking. The gold bar was then returned to its rightful owner.
Mr. Ta said the owner later contacted him—a man about 20–30 years old—offering to send a red envelope as a token of thanks.
It is noted that Shuibei is China’s largest hub for the gold, silver, and gemstone industry. The area attracts many visitors for gold trading and is a well-known gold exchange center in Shenzhen.
