(L&D) - More than 70 families in Texas are suing SpaceX, blaming Starship rocket launches for having caused vibrations, loud explosions and property damages near the launch site. The lawsuit raises questions about corporate responsibility in the development of commercial space activities in residential areas.

Accordingly, more than 70 households have filed a lawsuit against Space Exploration Technologies Corp., owned by billionaire Elon Musk. According to the complaint filed on Thursday in the federal court in Brownsville, Texas, the plaintiffs allege that 11 rocket launches conducted by SpaceX from mid-April 2023 to October 2025 generated vibrations and loud explosions, causing damage to homes in residential areas near the launch site. The complaint further alleges that SpaceX failed to adequately study the impact of these launches on surrounding communities and continued its operations despite the potential risk of property damage. It also claims that SpaceX was aware of these risks but proceeded with “conscious indifference to the rights, safety, or welfare of others, including the plaintiffs.”

SpaceX has spent many years transforming the South Texas coastal area into a large-scale industrial complex. The Starbase facility is designed to support high-volume rocket manufacturing operations. SpaceX, valued at $1.75 trillion, is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO).

The lawsuit states that Starship generates more than 16 million pounds of thrust (approximately 7.25 million kg), nearly twice that of NASA's modern Space Launch System. SpaceX's Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket are designed as a fully reusable transportation system. Both stand approximately 400 feet tall (equivalent to about 122 meters).

The lawsuit is currently in its early stages and no court ruling has been issued yet. From this development, it can be seen that disputes related to rocket launch operations in residential areas are drawing attention, against the backdrop of increasingly expanding commercial space activities.
