Approval of the list of 900 candidates for the titles of Professor and Associate Professor in 2025

(L&D) The State Council for Professorship has just announced the list of candidates who have met the qualification standards for the titles of Professor and Associate Professor in 2025. This year, a total of 900 individuals have been approved, including 71 Professors and 829 Associate Professors.

The list was reviewed at the fourth meeting of the State Council for Professorship for the 2024–2029 term, held on November 2. The Council discussed and voted on the results submitted by the disciplinary and interdisciplinary councils to select candidates eligible for recognition as meeting the qualification standards for the titles of Professor and Associate Professor.

Disclosure of information on qualified candidates

According to the report of the Office of the State Council for Professorship, in 2025, a total of 1,073 candidates submitted their applications, including 100 candidates for the title of Professor and 973 candidates for the title of Associate Professor, across 117 institutional councils.

After the rounds of application verification, foreign language assessment, and comprehensive scientific report evaluation, 1,014 candidates (93 for Professor and 921 for Associate Professor) were recommended for consideration by the disciplinary and interdisciplinary councils.

28 disciplinary and interdisciplinary councils reviewed and recommended 911 candidates (73 for Professor and 838 for Associate Professor) to the State Council for Professorship for recognition.

After receiving the candidates’ dossiers from the disciplinary and interdisciplinary councils, the Office of the State Council for Professorship, in coordination with the standing members of these councils, examined and verified all supporting documents in the dossiers and reported to the Standing Committee of the State Council for Professorship before submission to the Council for review and recognition.

Following the review, verification of evidence, and open discussion of each dossier, the State Council for Professorship conducted a vote. As a result, 900 candidates received the required number of approval votes in accordance with regulations, including 71 Professors and 829 Associate Professors. The success rate compared with the total number of initial applicants was 83.88%, of which the rate for Professor candidates was 71% and for Associate Professor candidates was 85.2%.

On November 3, the Office of the State Council for Professorship officially disclosed the list of 825 qualified candidates from 26 disciplines and interdisciplinary fields. Candidates in the fields of Security Science and Military Science - classified as special fields - were not publicly disclosed.

Economics and Medicine continue to lead in the number of recognized candidates

The evaluation process for the titles of Professor and Associate Professor is conducted through three levels: the Institutional Council for Professorship, the Disciplinary/Interdisciplinary Council for Professorship, and the State Council for Professorship. Statistics show that six disciplines and interdisciplinary fields achieved a 100% success rate, including: Transportation (41/41); Psychology (12/12); Hydraulic Engineering (7/7); the Interdisciplinary Field of History – Archaeology – Ethnology/Anthropology (6/6); Metallurgy (3/3); and Literature (1/1).

Economics continues to be the field with the highest number of qualified candidates, with 134 individuals (7 Professors and 127 Associate Professors), followed by Medicine with 114 individuals (14 Professors and 100 Associate Professors).

Among the 26 disciplinary and interdisciplinary councils, nine disciplines/interdisciplinary fields had no candidates recognized for the title of Professor, including: Mechanics; Earth and Mining Sciences; Law; Linguistics; Agriculture and Forestry; History – Archaeology – Ethnology/Anthropology; Hydraulic Engineering; Culture – Arts – Physical Education and Sports; and Literature.

According to the same list, the youngest Professor recognized in 2025 is Professor Dr. Tran Quoc Trung (born in 1986), Deputy Director of Campus II of the Foreign Trade University in Ho Chi Minh City. The two youngest Associate Professors recognized nationwide are Dr. Do Quang Loc, lecturer at the Faculty of Physics, University of Science (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), and Dr. Nguyen Ha Thanh, principal researcher at the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, Institute of Chemistry, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. Both were born in 1992.

11 candidates not qualified at the level of the State Council for Professorship

Compared with the list proposed by the disciplinary and interdisciplinary councils, 11 candidates did not meet the requirements for approval at the level of the State Council for Professorship.

Specifically: Medicine (3 candidates); Interdisciplinary Field of Philosophy – Political Science – Sociology (2); Economics (2); Linguistics (1); Educational Science (1); Interdisciplinary Field of Mechanical Engineering – Dynamics (1); and Interdisciplinary Field of Animal Science – Veterinary Medicine – Aquaculture (1).

In addition, five disciplines and interdisciplinary fields recorded the highest numbers of unapproved candidates, including Medicine, Electrical – Electronic – Automation Engineering, Information Technology, and Earth and Mining Sciences, each with 10 candidates; and Economics, with 19 candidates.

According to regulations, within 15 days after the announcement of results, the Chairperson of the State Council for Professorship shall sign the decision to recognize and issue certificates of qualification for the titles of Professor and Associate Professor to the approved candidates. After five years from the date of the recognition decision, if a candidate has not been appointed to the title of Professor or Associate Professor at a higher education institution, the decision will cease to be valid.
