(L&D) - U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is ready to implement new sanctions against Russia.
On September 13, U.S. President Donald Trump sent a letter to NATO countries, urging them to stop purchasing Russian oil and stating that he is prepared to impose major sanctions to bring the conflict in Ukraine to an end.
According to AFP, President Trump declared that he is ready to punish Russia, but on the condition that all allies in the NATO military alliance fully agree to stop buying Russian oil and implement their own sanctions.
“I am ready to impose major sanctions on Russia when all NATO member countries have agreed and start doing the same, as well as when all NATO member countries stop buying Russian oil,” Trump stated in a post on the Truth Social platform on September 13.
In the Truth Social post announcing the letter sent to NATO, Trump also suggested that NATO, as a bloc, should impose a 50%–100% tariff on China to weaken China’s economic influence over Russia. China is one of the major buyers of Russian oil.
“This is not Trump’s war, it is (former U.S. President) Biden’s and (Ukraine’s President) Zelensky’s war. I am only here to help end this war and save thousands of Russian and Ukrainian lives. If NATO acts as I say, the war will end quickly,” Trump emphasized.
The statement came a day after Trump said that his patience with Russian President Vladimir Putin is running out, while also hinting at tougher sanctions.
This was not the first time in September that President Trump expressed his “disappointment” with the Russian leader. On September 2, the White House chief announced that he would implement “certain measures.”

A few days later, Trump stated that he was ready to move to the second phase of sanctions against Russia.
Russia and Ukraine have held three rounds of negotiations this year in Istanbul, Turkey, with the most recent round taking place in July. However, the two sides have yet to reach an agreement on territorial issues and security guarantees.
Moscow has called for a diplomatic solution to the conflict but has warned that it will continue military actions until the root causes are resolved. Russia asserts that any agreement must include Ukraine’s neutral status, disarmament, and recognition of Crimea as well as the Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia regions as part of Russia.
At the same time, Moscow opposes any security guarantees for Ukraine that do not involve or have the consent of Russia.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to insist that it will not make territorial concessions in negotiations.
President Trump stated that sanctions targeting banks and oil are one option, alongside tariffs, but European countries also need to participate.
Despite Trump’s recent efforts, the path to peace in Ukraine remains unclear, and there is no sign that fighting on the ground will subside.
On September 12, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine could still occur, but are currently on hold.
Speaking at a press conference, Peskov urged people not to "look at everything through rose-colored glasses," noting that the peace process is complex and cannot yield immediate results.
