On September 18, the United States once again used its veto power to block a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, shielding its ally Israel from significant diplomatic pressure, according to AFP.
All 14 other members of the United Nations Security Council supported the resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The resolution was introduced in August in response to the United Nations’ official declaration of famine after nearly two years of Israel’s military campaign against Hamas in Gaza, according to AFP.
Palestinians fled as the 15-story Mushtaha Tower in Gaza City collapsed after an Israeli airstrike on September 5.
The draft resolution, seen by AFP, called for “an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza to be respected by all parties” as well as the immediate and unconditional release of hostages.
The United States has repeatedly rejected this approach, most recently in June when it used its veto power to shield Israel, according to AFP.
“Let this resolution send a clear message—that the Security Council does not turn its back on starving civilians, on the hostages, and on the demand for a ceasefire,” said Christina Lassen, Denmark’s Ambassador to the UN, ahead of the vote.
“A generation is at risk of being lost not only to conflict but also to poverty and despair. Meanwhile, Israel has expanded its military operations in Gaza City, inflicting further suffering on the population,” Ambassador Lassen warned.
Pakistani Ambassador Asim Ahmad called the veto “a dark moment in this chamber.” Meanwhile, Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon condemned the resolution, saying that “the proposal was put forward without condemning Hamas, without condemning the massacre of October 7.”

On October 7, 2023, Hamas gunmen attacked southern Israel, killing 1,219 people and taking 251 hostages back to Gaza.
Afterward, Israel launched a retaliatory military campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, killing more than 65,000 people, most of them civilians, according to the latest figures from the Gaza Health Authority cited by AFP.
The new vote took place as Israeli tanks and fighter jets attacked Gaza City in the northern Gaza Strip, AFP reported. This city was the target of a new ground offensive by the Israeli army, forcing Palestinians to flee southward.
AFP journalists and witnesses observed streams of Gazans continuously moving south by foot, vehicles, and donkey carts. “There is artillery fire, airstrikes, fire from helicopters and drones. The bombings never stop,” AFP quoted Aya Ahmed (32), who was sheltering with 13 relatives in Gaza City, as saying.
“The whole world does not understand what is happening. They (Israel) want us to evacuate to the south, but where will we live? There are no tents, no means of transportation, no money,” Aya Ahmed said.
Many Palestinians reported that the cost of a trip to southern Gaza had skyrocketed, in some cases exceeding 1,000 USD, according to AFP.
“The situation is truly indescribable—crowds everywhere, many explosions, men and women crying, screaming as they walked carrying their belongings,” said Mr. Shadi Jawad (47), recounting the horrifying scene his family experienced when they fled their home on September 17.
Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City announced on September 18 that it had received the bodies of 33 people killed in Israeli airstrikes since midnight.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military declared that it continued to target “Hamas terrorist infrastructure” in Gaza City and was also operating in the cities of Rafah and Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip.
The new ground offensive has sparked international outrage as the Gaza Strip has been devastated by conflict and the Gaza City area is suffering from famine declared by the United Nations, according to AFP.
